Standard Garage Door Height: 7 ft, 8 ft and When to Go Taller
The standard garage door height is 7 ft (84 in) for single and double doors. 8 ft (96 in) is the common upgrade for heavy-duty and lifted trucks, roof boxes and low-roof vans. Taller vans need 9 or 10 ft, and motorhomes 12 to 14 ft.
Height is the simplest garage door size. Clopay gives 7 ft as the standard garage door height for both single and double doors, and Amarr lists just two heights, 7 and 8 ft. A stock car, SUV or half-ton pickup fits under 7 ft. This page shows by how much, which vehicles need 8 ft or more, and what a taller door needs from your ceiling. For widths and every standard size, see garage door sizes.
Standard garage door heights
Makers build more heights than stores stock. Clopay lists standard heights from 6 to 8 ft in 3-inch steps, leaving out 7 ft 3 in, and says most of its doors come in extended heights up to 16 ft. CHI uses the same 3-inch steps. Garaga builds doors 6 to 12 ft high in 1- or 3-inch steps.
| Door height | Inches | Meters | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 ft to 6 ft 9 in | 72, 75, 78, 81 | 1.83–2.06 | Standard at Clopay, in 3-inch steps |
| 7 ft | 84 | 2.13 | The standard height for single and double doors |
| 7 ft 3 in | 87 | 2.21 | The one step Clopay and CHI leave out |
| 7 ft 6 in, 7 ft 9 in | 90, 93 | 2.29, 2.36 | Standard at Clopay. Garaga suggests 7 ft 6 in or 8 ft for more room over a pickup or SUV |
| 8 ft | 96 | 2.44 | The common upgrade, and Amarr’s only other standard height |
| 9 to 16 ft | 108–192 | 2.74–4.88 | Extended heights, built to order for vans, campers and RVs |

The average, or typical, garage door height is 7 ft. We found no survey of door heights, but store shelves tell the story. On October 7, 2026, Home Depot listed 65 doors at 9 × 7 ft and 6 at 9 × 8 ft, and 54 at 8 × 7 ft against 5 at 8 × 8 ft (9 × 7, 9 × 8). Taller doors have been gaining for a while: in 2005, NAHB’s Nation’s Building News, reprinted by DASMA, reported that builders were finding buyers increasingly preferred 8 by 10 ft doors to the “more standard” 7 by 9 ft, so their SUVs would fit, and Garaga says 16 × 8 is the double its own customers request most.
You can often read the height from the door. Wayne Dalton builds its 8 × 7 door from four panels and its 8 × 8 from five (Wayne Dalton). CHI makes sections 21 in high, and four of them make 84 in, a 7 ft door. To check the height of a garage door you already have, open it and measure from the floor to the header, watching for an uneven floor (Overhead Door). Garage floors often slope, so measure at both sides and the middle and use the lowest number.
Is a 7 ft garage door tall enough?
For almost every stock vehicle, yes. Here is the tallest model in each class from our vehicle research, and the room left under 7 and 8 ft doors:
| Vehicle class (tallest in our sample) | Height | Room under 7 ft | Room under 8 ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compact or midsize sedan (Nissan Sentra, Honda Accord) | 57.1 in | 26.9 in | 38.9 in |
| Small SUV (Toyota RAV4 AWD) | 66.7 in | 17.3 in | 29.3 in |
| Minivan (Chrysler Pacifica, Kia Carnival) | 69.9 in | 14.1 in | 26.1 in |
| Midsize 3-row SUV (Honda Pilot Elite) | 71.0 in | 13.0 in | 25.0 in |
| Full-size SUV (Ford Expedition) | 78.1 in | 5.9 in | 17.9 in |
| Half-ton pickup (Toyota Tundra 4WD) | 78.0 in | 6.0 in | 18.0 in |
| Golf cart, lifted, with top (Club Car Onward) | 80.5 in | 3.5 in | 15.5 in |
| Off-road half-ton (Ford F-150 Raptor) | 80.7 in | 3.3 in | 15.3 in |
| Heavy-duty pickup (Ford F-250 crew cab) | 81.4–81.6 in | 2.4–2.6 in | 14.4–14.6 in |
| Low-roof van (Ford Transit) | 82.2–82.9 in | 1.1–1.8 in | 13.1–13.8 in |
Heights from Edmunds 2026 spec pages (listed in Sources), Ford (Expedition, F-150, Super Duty, Transit) and Club Car. The F-250 range covers the 8 ft box (Ford) and the 6¾ ft box (Edmunds).
Cars, small SUVs, minivans and 3-row SUVs clear a 7 ft door by a foot or more. Full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups clear it by about 6 in. Heavy-duty trucks, off-road trims, lifted golf carts and low-roof vans have 1 to 3½ in, and that is where 8 ft starts to make sense.
Those margins are on paper, for two reasons:
- The open door can hang below the header. When the door is up, its bottom section rests in the curve of the track, near the top of the opening and sometimes below it. We found no maker’s figure for how far. One poster on the Garage Journal forum put it at 3 to 5 in, but nobody in the thread measured it, and others said the stop point can be adjusted. Open your door and measure from the floor to its lowest edge.
- Your vehicle may be taller than its spec. Spec sheets give stock height. A lift kit, bigger tires, a roof rack or a roof antenna adds to it. Measure to the highest point.
When you need a taller door
Clopay suggests an 8 ft door if you drive a larger SUV or a truck, or carry roof racks or bikes on top of the car, and taller doors for a camper or oversized vehicle. Here is what that means in inches.
Trucks and lifted trucks
A stock half-ton pickup fits under 7 ft: the Tundra in Figure 1 leaves 6.0 in, and the full range of 2026 F-150 4×4 trims runs 76.7 to 80.7 in tall, leaving 3.3 to 7.3 in (Ford). A heavy-duty F-250 crew cab leaves 2.4 to 2.6 in. Lifts vary too much to give one figure, so do the subtraction yourself: every inch of lift comes straight off the margin. Lift a Tundra 6 in and it is exactly as tall as a 7 ft opening. Under an 8 ft door it would still have 12 in to spare.
Roof racks and roof boxes
Roof loads add height fast. A Thule Motion 3 XL roof box is 17 in tall, and Thule gives its height above the crossbars as 15 in. So the total is the vehicle’s height, plus the height of the crossbars above the roof, plus 15 in.
Measure your own bars: if they and their feet stand more than 2.5 in above the roof, a CR-V with this box won’t clear a 7 ft door. The Motion 3 XL Low is 14 in tall and rises 12 in above the bars, which gives the same CR-V 5.5 in for crossbars. If you leave a box on all season, or carry bikes on the roof, an 8 ft door is the simple fix. Heights from Honda and Edmunds.
Vans, golf carts and camper vans
Vans come in roof heights, and each roof height skips a door size. Figure 3 puts each one in front of the smallest standard door that clears it.
- Golf carts. A lifted Club Car Onward with its top is 80.5 in tall. It fits under 7 ft with 3.5 in to spare, but not under a 6 ft 6 in (78 in) door, the height Garaga suggests for an 8 × 14 ft garden shed’s door. The same cart without the lift is 71 in.
- Low-roof vans fit under 7 ft by 1.1 to 1.8 in (Ford Transit). Choose 8 ft.
- Medium-roof and standard-roof vans need 9 ft. A Transit medium-roof cargo van is 101.3 in (99.2 in as a passenger van), and a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter with the standard roof is 100 in (Mercedes-Benz). Both are too tall for 8 ft.
- High-roof vans need 10 ft. A Transit high-roof cargo van is 109.6 to 110.4 in; the passenger versions are 107.7 to 108.6 in, from 0.3 in under to 0.6 in over a 9 ft door. A Sprinter high roof is 107 in, which clears a 9 ft door by just 1 in.
- Camper vans need 10 ft or more. A Winnebago Travato 59K is 9 ft 4 in tall and clears a 10 ft door by 8 in.
RVs
RV doors are usually 10, 12 or 14 ft tall (Clopay, Amarr). Garaga puts the average Class C motorhome at 10 to 12 ft tall and Class A at 12 to 14 ft, so most need a 12 or 14 ft door and the tallest need a custom height. Size the door from your coach’s spec sheet plus anything on the roof, not from its class: one of the motorhome examples on our hub page misses a 12 ft door by an inch.
How much room does an 8 ft door need?
A taller door needs a taller, deeper garage. The springs, the curve of the track and the opener rail all sit above the opening, and the track and opener reach back into the garage. Each extra foot of door raises all of that by a foot and pushes it a foot deeper.
| Space needed | 7 ft door | 8 ft door | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Headroom above the opening, torsion springs, no opener | 12–13½ in | 12–13½ in | Clopay, Garaga, Raynor 12 in; Wayne Dalton 13½ in |
| Headroom with a ceiling-mounted opener | 14–16 in | 14–16 in | Springs plus 2 to 3 in (Garaga, Wayne Dalton, Clopay); Amarr 15 in |
| Ceiling height, torsion springs and opener | 98–100 in 8 ft 2 in–8 ft 4 in | 110–112 in 9 ft 2 in–9 ft 4 in | Door height plus the line above |
| Backroom, no opener | 102–110 in | 114–122 in | Door height + 18 in (Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton); Raynor + 26 in |
| Backroom with an opener | 123–134 in | 135–146 in | Chamberlain 123–128 / 135–142 in, Wayne Dalton 125 / 137 in, Amarr door height + 50 in |
Sources: Clopay installation manual, Garaga, Raynor, Wayne Dalton manual, Amarr, Chamberlain. The ceiling row is our arithmetic. Extension springs need about 2 in less headroom than torsion springs (10 in at Clopay, 11 in at Wayne Dalton).
That ceiling row is the number to check before you upsize. Standard garage ceilings are 8 to 9 ft (Trusscore), and an 8 ft door with torsion springs and a ceiling-mounted opener needs about 9 ft 2 in to 9 ft 4 in. Even a 7 ft door is tight under an 8 ft ceiling: 96 in leaves 12 in above the opening. That is enough for torsion springs alone at Clopay, Garaga and Raynor (Wayne Dalton asks for 13½ in), but 2 to 4 in short of every maker’s figure for springs plus an opener rail.
If your ceiling is short of that, you have three ways in:
- A wall-mounted opener. It sits beside the door on the spring shaft, so there is no rail to clear. It needs 8½ in of wall on its side of the opening (LiftMaster 98022 manual).
- A low-headroom track. Clopay’s double-track kit works with as little as 4½ in of headroom (installation manual), and its low-headroom conversion kits work on doors up to 8 ft tall; taller doors need a full low-headroom track set (Clopay). See low headroom garage doors.
- A shorter door. 7 ft 6 in is a standard height at Clopay, and it gives 6 in more room than 7 ft while needing 6 in less ceiling than 8 ft.
Check the opener too. Genie’s do-it-yourself chain and belt openers cover doors up to 7 ft, and doors over 7 ft up to 8 ft need its rail extension kit (Genie). Chamberlain sells rails sized for 7, 8 and 10 ft doors (Chamberlain manual).
7 ft or 8 ft: how to choose
- Measure your tallest vehicle at its highest point, roof load included.
- Measure the open door from the floor to its lowest edge.
- Keep 7 ft if that leaves several inches: cars, SUVs, minivans and stock half-ton pickups.
- Choose 8 ft for a heavy-duty or lifted truck, a lifted golf cart, a low-roof van, a roof box, or a bigger next vehicle.
- Choose 9 or 10 ft for medium- and high-roof vans and camper vans, and 12 to 14 ft for motorhomes.
- Check the ceiling before ordering anything taller: about door height plus 14 to 16 in.
Then check the width. A door tall enough for a truck is no use if the mirrors hit the jambs: see garage door width.
Questions people ask
What is the standard garage door height?
7 ft (84 in, 2.13 m) for both single and double doors. 8 ft (96 in) is the common taller option.
Is a 7 ft garage door tall enough?
For stock cars, SUVs, minivans and half-ton pickups, yes: they clear it by about 6 in or more. Heavy-duty and lifted trucks, low-roof vans and anything with a roof box are better off with 8 ft.
What size garage door do I need for a truck?
A stock half-ton pickup fits under a 7 ft door with about 3 to 7 in to spare. A heavy-duty pickup leaves only about 2½ in, so choose 8 ft for it or for any lifted truck. For width, a 9 ft door clears most pickups with their standard mirrors out.
How much clearance do you need for an 8 foot garage door?
About 14 to 16 in above the opening for torsion springs and a ceiling-mounted opener, so a ceiling of about 9 ft 2 in to 9 ft 4 in. Behind the opening it needs 114 in without an opener (122 in by Raynor’s rule) and about 135 to 146 in with one. Each side needs about 3 to 3¾ in for the tracks.
What is the average garage door height?
7 ft. No one publishes a survey, but 7 ft doors far outnumber 8 ft doors in store listings: 65 vs 6 for 9 ft wide singles at Home Depot in October 2026.
Do garage doors come 7 ft 6 in tall?
Yes. Clopay builds standard heights in 3-inch steps from 6 to 8 ft, including 7 ft 6 in and 7 ft 9 in, but not 7 ft 3 in. Expect to order them through a dealer rather than buy them off the shelf.
How tall is an RV garage door?
Usually 10, 12 or 14 ft. A camper van like the 9 ft 4 in Winnebago Travato fits a 10 ft door. Garaga puts Class C motorhomes at 10 to 12 ft tall and Class A at 12 to 14 ft, so most need a 12 or 14 ft door. Use your coach’s spec sheet.
