Single Car Garage Door Size: 8 × 7, 9 × 7 and 9 × 8, Measured

THE ANSWER

The standard single car garage door size is 8 × 7 ft or 9 × 7 ft: 96 or 108 in wide and 84 in high. 8 ft wide fits cars, small SUVs and midsize pickups with their mirrors out. Choose 9 ft wide for full-size SUVs and pickups, 9 × 8 ft for heavy-duty or lifted trucks, and 10 ft wide to keep tow mirrors out.

A single car garage door is sized for one vehicle, and most are 8 or 9 ft wide and 7 ft tall. Clopay names 8 × 7 and 9 × 7 as the most common single sizes, CHI says most single doors are 8 × 7, and Home Depot lists more 9 × 7 doors than any other size. This page measures each single size, shows which vehicles fit through it with their mirrors out, and covers what changes when the door is 8 ft tall or 10 ft wide. For every size, single and double, see garage door sizes.

Single garage door sizes

Single doors come 8, 9 or 10 ft wide and 7 or 8 ft tall (Amarr). Clopay builds heights in 3-inch steps between 6 and 8 ft, but stores stock 7 ft. On October 7, 2026, Home Depot showed 65 doors at 9 × 7 and 54 at 8 × 7, against 6 at 9 × 8 and 5 at 8 × 8.

Wall it needs: door width + 3¾ in of side room at each side for the tracks (Clopay, Amarr). To frame a new opening, add 3 in to the width and 1½ in to the height for the wood jambs (Angi), and order the door at the finished opening size. More in garage door rough opening.

Which vehicles fit through a single garage door

The mirrors decide the width (more in garage door width), so the matrix below uses each class’s width with mirrors out. We call a fit tight when it leaves less than 3 in at a side or overhead.

Fits: at least 3 in at each side with mirrors out and 3 in overhead. Fold mirrors: the mirrors are as wide as the door or wider, so there is no room at the jambs with them out. Class values are the largest model in each class, rounded up (average car dimensions). Most makers don’t publish width with mirrors, so these are estimates except the full-size car figure (Tesla Model S, 86.2 in): body width + 12 in for cars, SUVs, minivans and midsize pickups, + 16 in for full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups, + 26 in for heavy-duty tow mirrors, + 8 in for sports cars. Golf cart: Club Car Onward 4-passenger, lifted.

Published widths land close to the estimates. A Chrysler Pacifica is 90.4 in with its mirrors (Edmunds), so it gets 2.8 in a side in an 8 ft door. A Ford Expedition is 94.6 in, which leaves 0.7 in a side. That works on paper and fails in practice, because real openings are narrower than their name: in a worked example from Ask the Builder, trim and weatherstripping on the jambs take about 2¼ in, leaving a 9 ft door 105¾ in clear.

Figure 2. Seen from above, the mirrors are the only part of a Ford Expedition that comes close to the jambs. Ford’s figures: 80.0 in across the body, 94.6 in with mirrors out and 84.6 in folded (Ford). Spare width is per side, at the nominal door width.

8 × 7 garage door

An 8 × 7 door is 96 in wide and 84 in high (2.44 × 2.13 m). It is the size CHI calls most common for a single car garage, and Home Depot’s second most listed single. Garaga says most cars fit an 8 ft door easily. Framed, before the jambs, the opening is 99 × 85½ in.

What fits. With mirrors out at class size, an 8 ft door leaves 6 in a side for a compact car, 5 in for a midsize sedan, 4½ in for a small SUV and 3½ in for a midsize pickup. Minivans and 3-row SUVs get 2½ in, which is tight. Full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups are ½ to 1½ in a side wider than the door with their mirrors out, so the mirrors fold every time. Height is no issue below heavy-duty pickups: a small SUV clears the header by 16 in.

If your trim takes the same 2¼ in as in the Ask the Builder example, a small SUV’s 4½ in a side becomes about 3⅜ in. That is why an 8 ft door suits cars and small SUVs driven straight in, and why a household with any full-size vehicle should look at 9 ft.

9 × 7 garage door

A 9 × 7 door is 108 in wide and 84 in high (2.74 × 2.13 m), and it has the most listings at Home Depot. Garaga recommends 9 or 10 ft for pickups. The framed opening is 111 × 85½ in.

What fits. Everything short of heavy-duty tow mirrors. At class size, a full-size SUV gets 5½ in a side and a half-ton pickup 4½ in. A 2026 Ford F-150, 95.7 in with mirrors out (Ford), gets 6.2 in, or about 5 in after the trim loss above. Height is closer: full-size SUVs and half-ton pickups, 79 in at class size, clear the header by 5 in, and heavy-duty pickups by 2 in.

What doesn’t. Tow mirrors. A Ford F-250 is 105.9 in wide with its standard tow mirrors out (Ford), which leaves about 1 in a side in a nominal 9 ft door and won’t clear 105¾ in once trim is on. Tim Carter of Ask the Builder says his own F-250 won’t fit such a door. Fold the mirrors or go 10 ft wide.

9 × 8 garage door

A 9 × 8 door is 108 in wide and 96 in high (2.74 × 2.44 m): the width of a 9 × 7 and a foot taller. Clopay suggests 8 ft tall doors for a larger SUV or truck, or for roof racks and bikes on top of the car. Stores carry few of them: 6 listings at Home Depot against 65 for 9 × 7. The framed opening is 111 × 97½ in.

What fits. The same widths as a 9 × 7, with 12 in more overhead. A heavy-duty pickup at 82 in has 14 in to spare instead of 2 in. A half-ton pickup has 17 in, room for a lift or a rack. A small SUV at 68 in with a 17 in Thule Motion 3 XL roof box (Thule) stands 85 in tall before crossbars: an inch too tall for a 7 ft door, with 11 in to spare under an 8 ft one.

8 × 8 garage door

An 8 × 8 door is 96 × 96 in (2.44 × 2.44 m), the width of an 8 × 7 with the height of a 9 × 8. Home Depot had 5 listings. Wayne Dalton builds its Classic Steel doors as a four-panel 8 × 7 and a five-panel 8 × 8. It suits a narrow vehicle that is tall or carries a load: a midsize pickup at 80 in has 4 in under a 7 ft door and 16 in under an 8 ft one, with 3½ in a side. Wide vehicles still fold their mirrors.

8 foot garage doors: tall singles need more room

“8 foot garage door” can mean 8 ft wide, the 8 × 7 above, or 8 ft tall. A tall single needs more than a taller opening.

Inside view of a 12 foot wide single garage with a 9 foot ceiling: a 9 by 7 door leaves 24 inches above it for springs and a ceiling opener, a 9 by 8 door leaves 12 inches, enough for torsion springs but not a ceiling opener, so it uses a wall-mount openerceiling opener7 ft24 in9 × 7 door, 9 ft ceilingSprings and a ceiling opener fitwall-mountopener8 ft12 in9 × 8 door, 9 ft ceilingSprings fit; use a wall-mount opener6 ft5 ft
Figure 3. The inside of a 12 ft wide single garage with a 9 ft ceiling, at one scale. A 9 × 7 door leaves 24 in above it. A 9 × 8 door leaves 12 in: enough for Clopay’s torsion springs, short of the 14 to 16 in a ceiling opener needs, so the opener goes on the wall beside the door.

Ceiling: door height + 14 to 16 in, which is each maker’s torsion-spring headroom plus its own opener allowance: 12 + 2 in (Garaga), 12 + about 3 in (Clopay), 13½ + 2½ in (Wayne Dalton); Amarr gives 15 in with an opener. Depth: door height + 18 in (Clopay, Amarr, Wayne Dalton) or + 26 in (Raynor); with an opener, Chamberlain‘s installed lengths (123–128 in, 135–142 in), Wayne Dalton (125, 137 in) and Amarr (door height + 50 in). Rails: Genie, Chamberlain.

The ceiling is what usually rules a tall single in or out. Trusscore puts standard garage ceilings at 8 to 9 ft. Under an 8 ft ceiling there is no room above a 9 × 8 door at all. Under a 9 ft ceiling there is 12 in: use a wall-mount opener, which needs 3 in from the ceiling to the center of the torsion bar and 8½ in of wall beside the door (LiftMaster 98022 manual), or low-headroom hardware. For a side view of the same clearances on a double door, see 16 × 8 doors, and for every height, garage door height.

10 ft wide single doors

A 10 ft door is 120 in wide (3.05 m). Clopay and Amarr list 10 ft as a standard single width, but stores list almost none: on October 7, 2026, Home Depot’s only 10 × 7 was a roll-up door and Lowe’s had one sectional door (a Wayne Dalton 9100), so expect a dealer order. It is the door for tow mirrors. Tim Carter writes that “you need a 10-foot-wide door” for a full-size heavy-duty pickup, and a heavy-duty pickup at class size (108 in with tow mirrors) gets 6 in a side. Make it 10 × 8 if the truck is lifted or carries a rack.

It still fits a typical single garage. Garaga pairs single doors with a garage of about 12 × 22 ft, and a 10 ft door in a 12 ft wall leaves 12 in at each side, more than the 3¾ in the tracks need and the 8½ in a wall-mount opener needs.

Questions people ask

What is the standard single garage door size?

8 × 7 ft or 9 × 7 ft (96 × 84 or 108 × 84 in). Clopay names both as most common; Home Depot lists more 9 × 7 doors.

Should a garage door be 8 or 9 feet wide?

9 ft if anyone in the house drives a full-size SUV or pickup, or if you don’t want to fold mirrors. 8 ft works for cars, small SUVs and midsize pickups, with 3½ to 6 in a side at class size.

How wide is a single car garage door?

Usually 8 or 9 ft (96 or 108 in). Amarr’s widest standard single is 10 ft (120 in); Garaga makes singles up to 12 ft.

Is 9 × 9 a standard garage door size?

No. 9 ft is a standard width, but Clopay’s standard heights run from 6 to 8 ft. It sells taller doors, up to 16 ft on most models, as “extended heights”, so a 9 × 9 is not a standard size.

What is the size of a normal single garage?

Garaga pairs a single door with a garage of about 12 × 22 ft. Alan’s Factory Outlet calls 12 × 20 ft standard, and Chula Vista requires at least 240 sq ft for a one-car garage in its R-2-T zone. More in single car garage size.

How wide is a 2 car garage with one door?

The one door is usually 16 ft wide, and the garage 18 to 24 ft: Garaga’s minimum for two vehicles is 18 ft, and West Valley City requires 20 ft. See double garage door size.

Is a 12 ft garage door standard?

Yes. Clopay lists 12 ft among its standard widths and counts it as a double; Garaga counts it as its widest single. For one vehicle it is roomy, 18 in a side even for heavy-duty tow mirrors, but it needs a 12 ft 7½ in wall, a little more than a 12 ft wide garage has.

Will a golf cart fit through a single garage door?

Yes. A Club Car Onward 4-passenger is 48.75 in wide and 71 in tall with its top, or 80.5 in lifted (Club Car), which leaves 3½ in under a 7 ft door.
